A planners generally work for city, county, state, federal or regional governmental agencies and may have broad responsibilities. Some may work for construction or architectural firms, while others may work on their own as consultants, as teachers or as independent researchers. Urban planners can specialize in a number of arenas, such as transportation, community development and re-development, urban design, rural or industrial development, and land use or code enforcement, for example.
Urban planners study and design ways to revitalize poor and underdeveloped areas, expand and renovate cities, schools, parks and recreational areas, and public transportation and highway systems. They conduct studies and gather and analyze data on how land is being used for residential, community, and business purposes. They meet and talk with public officials, lawyers, land developers, and community, business and labor organizations to scope out public opinion and work their way through the approval process. They prepare reports and submit proposals to planning commissions and other government agencies detailing new development plans and the costs involved, how the plans are to be carried out, and supervise them to completion.
Generally a planner to work of one or more specialization scope. More planner experience their career life in one aspect, there is also who active in specialization such as : community development, land use planning, transportation planning, environmental, development economic, urban design, public management, resident, tourism, and society enableness.

In Indonesia, with have basic of planning knowledge of a regional from micro until macro scale (site planning, urban planning, regional planning) or from its interest (transportation, land use, economics, sociology, tourism, etc). They work and function in local goverment, province, and national. They also to work in self-supporting institute of society, private sector, developer real estate, and planning consultant/ multi discipline.
